This is the second large-scale publication from 50by70 created by designer Tim Fishlock to celebrate the work of wonderful artists and designers. It's only an edition of 350, so if you want one you better by sharpish!

The De La Warr Pavilion is always a great weekend drive out - it's an amazing building, there's always an interesting exhibition on and the cafe has such delicious cake, what's not to like?! But until 26 February 2012 there's an added bonus to taking a trip out there...

Warhol is Here, the best collection of Andy Warhol work I've ever seen in one place. I've read a lot about this exhibition over the last month, but I was still amazed by it's size and content. There are some of Warhol's most iconic pieces in little old Bexhill, pieces I've discussed and written about in many art history lectures and essays so to see them in all their enourmity was a real treat.

The ground floor gallery guides you through the main part of his career from early pan & ink illustrations, through his commercial works, self-portraits, photography and on to some of his most famous 60's and 70's pieces; the wonderful Marilyn Diptych (1962), all ten Mao (1972) screenprints, the Brillo Boxes (1968), two prints from the Campbell's Soup series (Green Pea & Tomato, both 1968) and a selection of the Electric Chair series.

The First floor gallery, papered floor to ceiling in the bright pink & yellow cow print, focusses on Warhol's later 80's work including one of my favourite pieces - the giant bold and brash Dollar Sign (1981).

And for those with enough energy to make it to the rooftop foyer, there's a sound installation by Dr. Jean Wainwright to accompany the exhibition. Tape recordings of interviews, stories and conversations about Andy Warhol with those that knew him well.

I can't recommend this exhibition enough, it's exhibition of the year for me and to top it all, it's free admission!

"The show is assembled from a selection of works from ARTIST ROOMS, (a new collection of modern and contemporary art held by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland for the nation), as well as those sourced from Tate collection, The British Museum, V&A, Cecil Higgins Art Gallery other private collections."

Lo Cole at Castor + Pollux

Our favourite seafront gallery, Castor + Pollux is currently showing (and selling) illustrator Lo Cole's bold and colourful prints until the 18 October.

Lo Cole is a freelance illustrator and print maker based in Gloucestershire with a career already spanning 20 years and a very impressive client list including; Vogue, The Guardian, Greenpeace, The Royal National Theatre, Harper Collins and Royal Mail Stamps.

All his pieces are vibrant and energetic, but some are simple and graphic whilst others are wild and abstract. It's the more graphic prints that do it for me though, especially the bird one above with the lovely little pink and red birds.

I really need to get down there and see it before it finishes!

Revolutionary Film Posters

Revolutionary Film Posters: Aesthetic Experiments of Russian Constructivism, 1920-33 is an exhibition just coming to an end at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York.

The exhibition comprises of 95 posters including works from Alexander Rodchenko, 'The Stenberg Brothers' (Georgii & Vladimir) and Alexander Naumov. Many of which are the only known surviving examples and have never before been publicly exhibited.

"Reacting to the chaos of the Russian Revolution, the Constructivists sought order and felt it their civic duty to engineer a more stable and harmonious society."

I love the bold colours and dynamic compositions. It's such a shame I've only just found out about it. Don't worry though if you missed it too, all the posters along with photos of the exhibition can be seen here.

Sunny Side Up

Andy Smith's new exhibition Sunny Side Up at Soma Gallery, Bristol promises to be great. It previews on Friday 24th June and then runs until the 20th August.

The exhibition will include 12 new large, hand-screenprints featuring "bold statements, strange visitors, warnings from gurus, the thoughts of CaptainScott and other random themes", new 3d arrows, moose heads, totes and stickers all in the distinctive Andy Smith illustration and lettering style.

All the artwork in the show will be available online too, so don't worry if like me you can't make it over to Bristol for the show.

MOMA's Department of Advertising & Graphic Design

MOMA's Department of Advertising and Graphic Design (their in-house design team) have launched a portfolio site showcasing a selection of their recent exhibition design, advertising and print.

It's really interesting to see how they use the gallery space for each exhibition and how well they design the info graphics/signage to enhance the visitor experience and compliment each artists work. I also love that they've commissioned traditional billboard artists too!

I've always wanted to visit MOMA, but after seeing these pics I want to go even more.

Vintage Circus Posters

These gorgeous, vintage circus posters have been tucked away here for quite a few years. They're American and mostly from the 60'/70's with the exception of the black, red and yellow, Royal Hanneford Circus one, which is from 1990.

I absolutely love the off-set print on the graphics, the sometime garish colours and the big type. The circus would have lots of the posters printed with blank space at the top or bottom to have the dates printed as and when required.

All the above posters are printed onto a thick card and are approx. 357 x 560 mm in size. They're currently part of the AT Open House at 42 Hendon Street, Brighton and have just been added to their new web shop. Quick, grab yourself a bargain vintage poster!

So Saturday afternoon I worked the vintage tearoom at AT Openhouse (complete with vintage pinny) I sliced cake, poured tea and chatted to visitors about the artists/work on show. It's the first Openhouse I've been involved with and although it was only day one, I really enjoyed it.

The house looks incredible, April and Tim have completely given their lovely home over to the show - every room, corner and shelf is full to bursting with prints, paintings, vintage clothes, jewellery, soft furnishings and cake from 17 different artists, designers, crafters and print makers.

Eliza Fricker Screenprints

We're loving the work of Brighton-based, illustrator and screen printer Eliza Fricker - from bold, bright architectural prints to quirky and kitsch collages, they're all fantastic. Our personal favourite is the cat and cake collage - cats and cake, what's not to like, it's like it was made for us!

Eliza's screenprints will soon be available in her Etsy store and have recently been accepted for the Islington Art and Design Fair. You can keep up-to-date with all Eliza's new work and daily goings on over on her blog.

Wim Crouwel: A Graphic Odyssey

The Design Museum, London are currently showing the UK's first retrospective of Dutch designer Wim Crouwel's work, Wim Crouwel: A Graphic Odyssey. An exhibition showcasing posters, print, typography and exhibition design from his 60 year of his career.

Crouwel is recognised for his love of grids and typographic systems to create dynamic, experimental work. "Regarded as one of the leading designers of the twentieth century, Crouwel embraced a new modernity to produce typographic designs that captured the essence of the emerging computer and space age of the early 1960s".

Wim Crouwel: A Graphic Odyssey runs until 3 July 2011. A set of 5 limited edition 'C' prints (above) designed exclusively for the Design Museum by Spin are available here throughout the exhibition.

Burning Love - Jonny Hannah at Castor + Pollux

Burning Love is illustrator, Jonny Hannah's Valentine's exhibition currently showing at the fabulous Castor + Pollux until the 13 March.

Mr Hannah himself curated the exhibition and hung the work which includes lots of lovely screen prints, lino prints, hand drawn type and cut out letters (see pics below). I couldn't make it to the private view, but I'm really looking forward to seeing it this weekend.

I love Jonny Hannah's prints and already have a few myself. They always make me smile with their quirky typography and funny illustrations.

Don't worry if you can't make it down to sunny Brighton to see the show - all the prints above and many more are now available in the Castor + Pollux online shop.

Bass Notes: The film posters of Saul Bass

The last Saul Bass exhibition I remember in the UK was back in 2004 at London's Design Museum. As you would expect from a retrospective of such an influential designer, it was a very inspiring collection of work.

Much of his work was for the film industry and throughout the 60's Bass famously worked with film directors Martin Scorsese, Alfred Hitchcock and Otto Preminger producing iconic film posters. Posters we are now going to get the chance to see again thanks to Kemistry Gallery, London.

Bass Notes: The film posters of Saul Bass is a collection of film posters, title credits and film festival posters from the Lloyd Northover donation to the British Film Institute. I'm not sure which posters will be in the exhibition and I can't wait to find out, but to get you in the mood here's a selection of the classics...

How lucky am I? Look at the fabulous birthday gift I received at the weekend.

It's an original Harper, Harper, Harper poster created in 1977 to promote an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Edie, Brett and Charles Harper at the Frame House Gallery, Louisville, Kentucky.

The ladybird is a classic Charley Harper illustration and one he used regularly, so it's great to have a piece that incorporates it.

This poster and many other great Harper prints/posters are now available from Castor + Pollux, Brighton who are now an official Charley Harper retailer!

These gorgeous landscapes are the work of 18 year old photographer Valerie Chiang, born in Taiwan and now living in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Valerie's Flickr portfolio demonstrates a diverse range of styles and subjects as well as great composition in her photography. She has, "a passion for fine art and fashion photography" (below), but it's the mystical landscapes and nostalgic beach scenes that grabbed my attention the most (above). There's something very bewitching about them, maybe it's the bleakness of the scenes, but they all make me want to know more.

We're loving photographer Alan Powdrill's very seasonal new work. Greasy Christmas is a series of images showing the wonderful way our greasy spoon cafes trim-up for Christmas - no expense spared!

My favourite has to be the fairy lights decorating the plug socket, it's like looking at a scene from the start of Casualty.

Thanks for sharing Alan. I hope you didn't eat in any of those places - although that could be a whole other series!

The Creative Works of Thomas C Calder

Brisbane photographer Thomas Calder has a great collection of images on his site - a winning combination of surrealism, darkness and wit.

"My works are highly conceptual: Surreal, dreamy visual images that attempt to provoke feelings and emotions".

For me though, it's his more cinematic shots that really stand out - the strong contrast and more unusual compositions just make them seem timeless.Thomas is also a creative film-maker and actor so it's not surprising he can nail this style.

When I first saw Emily Turner's retro lolly prints I was immediately struck by childhood memories of running down the street to the ice cream van!

The simplicity of the illustrations with the red and blue print gives them a wonderful nostalgic feel, I'm sure having one on the studio wall would make it feel like Summer every day.

Drawing Fashion - wonderful fashion illustrations collected over 30 years by Joelle Chariau, owner of Galerie Bartsch & Chariau (Munich), is currently showing for the first time at London's Design Museum.

"Drawing Fashion celebrates a unique collection of some of the most remarkable fashion illustrations from the twentieth and twenty first centuries. These original works define the fine art of illustrating fashion, from the collections of Chanel, Dior, Comme des Garçons and Poiret as well as Viktor & Rolf, Lacroix and McQueen."

The exhibition has been curated by fashion historian Colin McDowell. The showcased illustrations span 100 years and are displayed alongside period photography, music and news to show the social, cultural and style changes throughout the decades.

This is definitely on my December gallery list, but there's no rush it's running until 6 March 2011 and for those who want a little more information - tickets are now available for Stephen Jones in conversation with Colin McDowell, Wednesday 26 January 2011 at 7.30pm. Get your tickets here.

Christie's Travel and Vintage Poster Auction

These wonderful Olivetti posters are coming up for auction on the 5 November as part of the Christie's Travel and Vintage Poster sale. You can view the ecatalogue here - you won't be disappointed, there are loads of great travel posters, but these Olivetti ones get my bid (or they would if I'd saved a few more pennies this year).

Olivetti Divisumma (above top) by Herbert Bayer (1953) is lot number 252. It's a linen-backed, lithographic print (71 x 51cm) classed as A- condition with an estimation of £1000-£1500.

Olivetti Elettrosumma 22 (above bottom) by Giovanni Pintori is lot number 255. This lithographic print (70 x 49 cm) printed by Arti Grafiche M & G Pirovano in 1956 is not backed, but is classed as A condition and has an estimation of £600-£800.

Preston Bus Station by Jonathan Kenyon

I was surprised to find these photographs of Preston Bus Station by Jonanthan Kenyon this morning on We Heart. I grew up in and around Preston and know this building very well. I've always loved it's bold architecture and unapologetic scale.

I was saddened earlier in the year to hear it's going to be knocked down as part of Preston's Tithebarn scheme (yet another urban regeneration programme) after it's application to become a listed building failed. It was designed in the late 60's by a Preston-based architect, Keith Ingham who worked at a local company, BDP (ironically the company now running the regeneration programme!) and when it first opened in 1969 it was hailed as the largest in the world.

There's no denying that the building could do with a bit of tlc, but Jonathan's images really capture the beauty of the building even in it's current state. Long live Preston Bus Station!

Gastrotypographicalassemblage at Kemistry Gallery

Well not the actual wall panels we posted about here, but a half-size photographic reproduction of this a 35 x 8ft typographic masterpiece. Gastrotypographicalassemblage was created by Lou Dorfsman for the wall of the CBS cafeteria circa 1966 and included the names of every food item available in the cafeteria at that time.

"We were allowed to have all the spreads and, a 10x8 black and white negative of the entire wall taken on the day it was unveiled. From this we worked with a company called VGL and printed it up at half scale (we couldn't fit full scale in the gallery) and had it stretched by AP Fitzpatrick. For a 45 year old negative the quality we have got from the blowup without any retouching is fantastic."

Gastrotypographicalassemblage: The Designs of Lou Dorfsman is an exhibition at Kemistry Gallery, London celebrating the print and advertising work Dorfsman produced during his time at CBS (1946 - 1987) originally as an art director and later as senior vice president and creative director for marketing communications and design.

The exhibition runs until 30 October 2010 and includes more than 60 original pieces as well as a short film about the Gastrotypographicalassemblage narrated by Dorfsman himself.

Julia Trigg at Castor + Pollux

Julia Trigg's large digital collages of gorgeous typographic ephemera are packed full of giant numbers, letters and graphic elements in bold, bright colours. Her new exhibition at Castor + Pollux showcases pieces created from her collection of 1920's - 1950's ham radio cards:

"These amateur hams could have been the first 'techno geeks', making contact with each other through radio, long before telephone was accessible.

They sent each other signals using a type of morse code called Quebec Sign Language and developed their own shorthand - a kind of early text language. They would send each other these letterpress printed 'QSL' cards via post to confirm receipt of the signals - eventually all over the world."

The exhibition previews on Friday and will be open to the public from 18 September to 17 October 2010.

Artist + Blacksmith, Agnes Jones

Artist and Blacksmith Agnes Jones has a wonderful illustration style that looks, at first glance loose and whimsical, but is in fact immensely detailed. It's a style I find really lends itself to architectural illustrations, so I love her series of clock towers (above).

Agnes is a trained metalworker and coupled with her creativity as an artist has created some great large scale commissions as well as some very pretty and delicate looking frames (below). She is based in Brighton and is always taking on new commissions, so get in touch here.

Muhammad Ali: The Champ

Muhammad Ali: The Champ is a fantastic exhibition currently running at Proud Chelsea gallery until 3 October 2010. Taken by award-winning photographer, Michael Gaffney, the collection documents the public and private life of Muhammad Ali from 1977 to 1978 when he worked as Ali's personal photographer.

"the result of this phenomenal year will reveal Ali the fighter, the friend, the father and the inspiration through the eyes of a true confidant".

It's a rare opportunity to see natural images of such an iconic figure, but if you can't make it down there to see them in person don't despair, you can view the full exhibition online here.

Charley Harper Federal Building Mural

I've read about the Charley Harper mural in the Federal Building Cincinnati, but had no idea it was still in existence until I saw these pics on Visualingual.

The mural illustrates American wildlife in Harper's unique style, easily recognisable even when created in mosaic tiles. In fact his style seems to really lend itself to this discipline.

It's so great to see it in such detail, so huge thanks Visualingual for going down there and then sharing your pics.

PS. Tomorrow is the last day to catch the Charley Harper exhibition at Castor + Pollux, Brighton.

Lillian Bassman at The Wapping Project Bankside

Some work from the ionic fashion photographer, Lillian Bassman will be showing as part of 'Group Show' (a collection of work from all the artists represented since the award-winning gallery opened it's doors in October 2010) at The Wapping Project Bankside.

Lillian, now 93, is renowned for her stylised black and white fashion photography (above and below) that graced the pages of Harper's Bazaar during the 60's and early 70's.

During the 70's she left Harper's and fashion photography altogether, it was only when a stash of her images was found in the 90's that interest in her work grew and Lillian returned behind the camera after a 20 year break.

Her images are beautiful and feminine, yet strong and contrasty - a combination that works perfectly, they're exaclty the kind of images I love. The exhibition starts on the 17 August and runs until the 4 September. There isn't anything about it yet on their website, but I found more information here.

Crisp Packet Exhibition at the De La Warr Pavilion

You may have read in the press this week about Dave Valentine and his £10,000 crisp packet collection! Well those of you lucky enough to live near Bexhill-on-Sea will have the opportunity to see the collection in it's entirety at the De La Warr Pavilion's, Collectors' Corner this Sunday (15 August).

Dave has been collecting the empty crisp packets since 1984 when he was 6 years old. Now 32, he has a collection of over 250 different examples (according to the dlwp, but 2 other sources say over 500!) many of which are no longer produced.

"The designs are so retro and cool. Crisp bags these days are a bit boring in comparison. People love the nostalgia of looking at the old packets - it takes them back in time and they get a real kick of that."

The collection will be available to view from 2.30pm onwards along with local artist Louise Kenward's collection of charity shop sourced ceramic figures.

"Louise has been collecting ceramic figurines for a number of years. For her, the significance of the figurines is their association with times past, commonly referencing the Victorian era and notions of nostalgia."

The De La Warr Pavilion in all it's modernist glory is worth a visit anyway on a sunny weekend, but add in an exhibition and their fabulous cream teas and it's a no brainer!

Blisters Blackout Submission Call

Print Club are now accepting submissions for their December show, Blisters Blackout - "40 Illustrators. 40 Edition and hand signed prints. 40 Pounds each".

All entries must be new work, and for the 'blackout' must have an element of glow-in-the-dark. Throughout opening night the exhibition space will be blacked-out revealing the glowing bits of the designs.

Roman Cieślewicz Retrospective

London's Royal College of Art are exhibiting the first major UK retrospective of Polish designer, Roman Cieślewicz's work from Friday (16 July) until 17 August.

"Cieślewicz was - alongside Fernando Arrabal and Alejandro Jodorowsky - a member of Panique, the 'last' surrealist group in France. At the same time he was a brilliant art director at Elle, and a contributor to Vogue. Remarkably prolific, he also worked closely with figures from the worlds of advertising and fashion including Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton.

Extraordinarily talented as an image-maker, Cieślewicz’s tools were not the pen or the brush but the scalpel and scissors. Working with collage, he produced compelling and original images by reworking familiar icons such Che Guevara or Mona Lisa. “I always go for the maximum picture and the maximum information. You need to stimulate imagination to the maximum” - he once said in an interview."

The exhibition will include 150 pieces of Cieślewicz's diverse work including the iconic magazine covers created for Opus (above top & middle) and the poster he designed for Hitchcock's Vertigo (above bottom). The collections on display are from the National Museum in Poznan, the Museum Art in Łódź and the private collection of Cezary Pieczyński.

Charley Harper at Castor + Pollux

The Charley Harper private view at Castor + Pollux on Friday night was great, the vintage prints looked fantastic framed and mounted up together and I noticed lots of red dots, so if you want one I would get down there sharpish. We are now the proud owners of the Trumpeter Swan (above) which I absolutely love and can't wait for the exhibition to end so we can bring it home (huge thanks Mike)! From memory the following were still available:

As well as the vintage prints on display they also have a selection of limited edition giclee prints and few of the posters Harper designed towards the end of his career (below) which are huge and great value for money at £35-45 unframed or mounted on board for an additional £30.

Huge news for UK Charley Harper fans...

Our friends at Castor + Pollux, Brighton have just announced the first UK exhibition of American illustrator Charley Harper's outstanding work. To say we're excited is an understatement!

Fans of Harper will be familiar with his work for Ford Times and know that many of his illustrations were also offered to readers as screen prints.

Well, this exhibition has 22 of the original Ford Times screen prints from the 50's and 60's hand-printed by the Harpers in their basement, along with some later prints from the 70's and 80's printed by the studio.

Last week I was fortunate enough to have a sneaky peak at the work and I can report it's even more amazing in the flesh than it is in any book.

The private view is on Friday 2 July and the exhibition runs from 3 July to 5 September 2010, so there is plenty of time to plan a trip to the seaside (Castor + Pollux is right on the seafront).

Nobrow Gallery

Nobrow have just dropped us a note to tell us about their new gallery (above) in fashionable Shoreditch, London!

Nobrow started in 2008 as an "independent publishing platform for illustration and the graphic arts that would showcase some of the best talent out there today, whether fresh out of college or from the ranks of well seasoned veterans".

They're inaugral exhibition Dungeons and Desktops runs until 22 July and is showcasing the wonderful work of illustrator Jack Teagle.

"Dungeons and Desktops is an exhibition that seamlessly melds the worlds of the fantastic and mundane, a cornucopia of staplers and swords, benefits and beasts, hair monsters and HR managers."

Prints, sculptures and original works from their catalogue of published illustrators and artists including Richard Hogg, Joe Crocker and Blexbolex (below) are also available in the gallery.

Paul Catherall at Castor + Pollux

Well the Brighton Festival is now in full swing and to celebrate, our friends at Castor + Pollux are showing new linocuts from the wonderful Paul Catherall.

We're big fans of his work and can't wait to see the exhibition which includes a print of Brighton's infamous Embassy Court building (top), which is available at the special price of £250 (unframed) when ordered before the 15 May or bought at the private view evening.

The private view on the evening of Friday 14 May kicks off the exhibition which will then run from 15 May - 20 June.

Jumpology!

How fantastic are these jumping photos by Philippe Halsman? I love them.

A Life photographer with over 101 cover shots to his name, a regular contributor to LOOK and the Saturday Evening Post, Halsman was often commissioned to shoot the rich, famous and influential people of the 50's. During this time he had the wonderful idea of Jump! - once the official shoots ended he would ask the stars (no matter how famous or important) to jump. The resulting images (above) are brilliant and show the celebs in such a natural, relaxed way.

"Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Salvador Dali, Weegee, Jack Dempsey and even the Duke and Duchess of Windsor agreed to take a leap of faith. In that era of live television along with the popularity of the big glossy magazines, one’s image was not nearly as protected and shaped by handlers as it is today. There was a feeling of innocence, a desire for spontaneity, and Halsman, with his playful and charming personality, knew he had to get almost everyone to oblige his demand: JUMP!"

Halsman called the series, 'Jumpology!' and for the first time they are being exhibited at the Laurence Miller Gallery in New York (exhibition runs until 28 May 2010). For those that can't make it over to NY there was a book of the images (below) published in 1986 which is still available here and here.

Going Going Gone Red!

Going Going Gone Red! is a forthcoming exhibition and auction (dates yet to be confirmed) to raise money for London's first Children's Hospice, Richard House.

lllustrators are contributing unique pieces of art, with either a head, body or legs theme, "fabulous, eccentric, one-off, original artwork. A creative collaboration by some of the most renowned and exciting illustrators working today".

The project includes work from some of our favourite illustrators; Pete Fowler (head - above), Agent provocateur (Body - above), Paul Thurlby (legs - above), James Joyce (head - below), Spencer Wilson (Body - below) and Andy Smith (legs - below).

I'll post up as soon as the dates are announced for the exhibition and auction - watch this space!

Be Kind To Books!

This gorgeous set of 5 Modernist posters were designed by Arlington Gregg circa 1936-40 as part of the WPA Illinois Art Project - Be Kind To Books.

The Works Projects Administration (WPA), previously called the Works Progress Administration were, according to the wisdom that is Wikipedia, "the largest New Deal agency, employing millions to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads, and operated large arts, drama, media, and literacy projects. It fed children and redistributed food, clothing, and housing. Almost every community in the United States had a park, bridge or school constructed by the agency, which especially benefited rural and Western populations."

These posters and many more including one of Milton Glaser's iconic 'Dylan' posters and a 1970's Eric Strenger Porsche poster, are due to be auctioned off at New York's, Swann Galleries Auction, May 3rd 2010 (Sale 2213, Modernist Posters). I could spend a serious amount of money at this auction, so it's probably a good job I'm on the other side of the pond!

Yay! Our Howdoos have just come back from the printers.

Howdoos are business cards with blanks on the reverse ready to be personalised. There are currently two designs - hello in bright pink...

and nice to meet you in black...

Both cards are hand letter-pressed onto grey board, so the print has lots of lovely texture and they smell delicious!

We'll be selling them in packs of ten from next week (hopefully in our new online store - finally!), so watch this space.

I've just discovered via Grain Edit the sad news that Edie Harper, widow of illustrator Charlie Harper passed away last week aged 87. Edie too was a fantastic illustrator - very similar in style to her husband, but often described as more whimsical. She was also a very talented painter and photographer.

Her work mostly focused on Biblical stories (above) and cats (below),"She loved cats forever and felt that stories from the Bible provided her with some good design ideas", said her son Brett, who runs the Harper Art Studio.

Fernand Fonssagrives Exhibition

I can't wait to see Fernand Fonssagrives at the Michael Hoppen Gallery. Fonssagrives was an iconic fashion photographer whose images have graced the pages of fashion magazines throughout the world.

His first wife and muse, ballerina turned model (and some say, the first super model) Lisa Fonssagrives, "helped to define the natural, effortless beauty that has become the mainstay of fashion photography as we now know it". His photos of Lisa embraced the mood of the 30's and 40's - the strikingly graphic silhouettes with a clean modernist feel and the dynamic, poses of her leaping through the air capturing the care-free attitude.

Fonssagrives died in 2003. Despite at one time being the highest paid photographer in the world and being a key figure in the New York School of avant-garde photography his work remained quite anonymous and rarely seen.

However from the 14 January to 6 March his wonderful images will be on show at the Michael Hoppen Gallery, London. I for one can't wait!

MINDTHEGAP

Following on from our Margaret Kilgallen post, we were thrilled to hear about mindthegap - the inaugural exhibition of Prism, an architecturally designed three-storey exhibition space and bookshop (below right) located on Sunset Boulevard, LA.

"The mission of the project space is to become a cornerstone of artistic experimentation, carving a new niche for the arts here in Southern California. The long-term exhibition program, featuring national and international artists, promises to be vibrant and thought-provoking as it works with creative minds to cultivate a challenging and diverse aesthetic experience for the public."

mindthegap features the work of 2 exceptional artists; Barry McGee (above) - husband of the late Margaret Kilgallen, a San Francisco based artist, "first known as 'Twist', the moniker under which he attained cult status among his peers as a graffiti writer" and Philip Frost (below left) - a self-taught artist and sculptor, "who began his career in the early '90s by aggressively blanketing New York City's streets and doorways with strips of brightly colored wheat-pasted posters".

Both Mcgee and Frost create strikingly bold, bright pieces - together their work will make a stunning exhibition. I just wish it was a bit nearer to the UK!

mindthegap is running until 20 February 2010.

Margaret Kilgallen aka META / Matokie Slaughter

A couple of weeks ago I watched Beautiful Losers, a short film by Aaron Rose documenting the NYC art and graffiti scene in early 90's and celebrating, "the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation".

There are many talented artists in the film including Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Jo Jackson and Mike Mills, but for me it was Margaret Kilgallen's work that really stood out. I had seen some of it before, but had no idea who was behind it. The giant, typographic murals really struck me, they're fantastic - the colours, the scale and the typefaces, I just love them.

Her work was heavily influenced by American folk art which can be seen in the illustrations and colour palettes. She valued craftmanship and loved old hand-painted shop signs, something that clearly inspired her murals.

"I like things that are handmade and I like to see people's hand in the world, anywhere in the world; it doesn't matter to me where it is. And in my own work, I do everything by hand. I don't project or use anything mechanical, because even though I do spend a lot of time trying to perfect my line work and my hand, my hand will always be imperfect because it's human. And I think it's the part that's off that's interesting, that even if I'm doing really big letters and I spend a lot of time going over the line and over the line and trying to make it straight, I'll never be able to make it straight. From a distance it might look straight, but when you get close up, you can always see the line waver. And I think that's where the beauty is."

Margaret did many colaborations with other artists in the film including her husband, Barry Mcgee. She was also a grafitti artist on the freight trains, influenced by Hobo tradition, she worked under the tags 'Meta' and 'Matokie Slaughter'.

Sadly in 2001 Margaret Kilgallen died aged 33 of breast cancer just weeks after giving birth to her daughter, Asha. She was a talented and inspirational artist and I'm so pleased to have found her work. I really want to see it in the flesh and retrospectives do pop up now and again, but until then this Flickr group has a great collection of her work.

Happy Birthday Hello Kitty!

This week marks the 35th birthday of one of my favourite characters, Hello Kitty. Now doesn't she look good for 35?

Hello Kitty was designed for Sanrio by Ikuko Shimizu. She was first introduced to the Japanese public on a small vinyl purse in 1974 and to the US public a few years later in 1976. The start of what they describe as a, "global Hello Kitty phenomenon", and who could disagree? Over the last 35 years many fictional characters have come and gone, but Hello Kitty is still going strong - stronger in fact!

To celebrate, Sanrio have teamed up with Jamie Rivadeneira, owner of pop-culture shop, JapanLa, to create a three week long exhibition, 'Three Apples Art Show' - "a multi-dimensional exhibition and celebration of all things Hello Kitty; the first ever event of its kind in the US!"

It incorporates an art exhibition showcasing one-of-a-kind Hello Kitty inspired pieces created by 80+ contemporary artists, a pop-up shop and unique product/design displays including a retrospective of products and collaborations from the last 35 years.

The event is currently running at the Royal, T café, shop and art space in Culver City, CA until 15 November.

For those of us that can't hop over to the West coast to see the exhibition, there are loads of 35th anniversary products available here.

Illustrator Stanley Hooper

These wonderfully, whimsical creations are the work of Brighton based illustrator, Stanley Hooper who describes himself as, “originally produced in Yorkshire, over 6ft and under 7ft tall, seagull expert, robot master, lover of pens, illustrator, motorbike rider and drinker of liquid”.

I love the muted colours he uses throughout his work creating a warm, nostalgic feel especially when combined with the collage and quirky compositions.

His work has graced the pages of numerous Uk and US publications/ newspapers including The Guardian, The Independent, National Geographic Adventure, Grand Designs Magazine and Waitrose Illustrated.

Some of his work is also available from his website as Giclee prints.

I collect vintage photos of cats and preferably people with their cats. It's something that I've done for many years now, but I have never come across an image as fantastic as this one.

I was delighted when I found it and even more delighted when I discovered it was part of Antique Animals, a Flickr group of vintage animal photographs - definitely worth a look!

These great snap shots of the 60’s are as seen through the eyes of Hollywood legend, Dennis Hopper. This Easy Rider, unbeknown to most, has been taking photographs since the 50’s. His own fame gave him easy access to America's elite and he photographed many iconic faces, from fellow actors, Dean Martin & John Wayne, to artists Andy Warhol, David Hockney & Roy Lichtenstein and musicians Tina & Ike Turner.

“His photos of a relaxed, shirtless Paul Newman and the cowboy-playing John Wayne and Dean Martin on the set of 'The Sons of Katie Elder' are visual gems”. Paul Laster for The Daily Beast.

Signs of the Times is an exhibition showcasing 110 of Hopper’s amazing images (1961-67), a selection of his new paintings and screenings of 40 of his films and TV shows. It runs from 24 October at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery, New York and will be accompanied by a 544 page limited edition book by Taschen of the same name.

Lyka Photography

It's all about photography around here at the minute! Seventeen year old Lyka Orhel from the Philippines is another self-taught photographer with an eye for fashion. She fell in love with photography at 14 and has been pursuing her passion ever since.

Lyka's portfolio is extensive with some striking portraits and lovely sun-drenched fashion shots. You can see more of her work here and follow the day-today goings on in the world of Lyka Photography here. Incidentally her blog is a current finalist in the '2009 Candy Teen Blog Awards' for 'Best Use of Photography' and 'Best Overall Blog'. Congratulations and goodluck Lyka!

Megan Breukelman

These gorgeous images are the delightful work of 15 year old Megan Breukelman from Ontario, Canada who describes herself as, "an amateur photographer and professional dreamer".

Megan is a self-taught photographer and has only been practising her art for just over a year! She loves shooting portraits, nature and fashion, but has also got some great conceptual pieces on her website and some very professional looking wedding shots. The umbrella shot is my favourite, it's got a timeless, classic feel and looks like it came straight out of Vogue.

I'm totally amazed by the work of such young photographers, it's great to see raw talent and passion. Keep up the good work Megan!

The Impossible Project - Re-inventing Instant Film

These gorgeous photos are of the currently disused Polaroid factory in the Netherlands the once home of Instant Integral production. Unfortunately the production of Polaroid Instant Film came to an end in June 2008 with the closure of the above factory and the Mexican, Instant Pack-film factory. It was sad news too many of us who still had, and loved our Polaroid cameras.

However, there maybe light at the end of the tunnel. A team of ex-Polaroid employees, engineers, chemists and technical specialists have embarked on 'The Impossible Project' to re-start the production of analog Integral Film for vintage Polaroid cameras by 2010!

They've already, "acquired the complete film production equipment in Enschede (NL) from Polaroid, has signed a 10-year lease agreement on the factory building; and has engaged the most experienced team of Integral Film experts worldwide". Their aim, "is NOT to re-build Polaroid Integral film but (with the help of strategic partners) to develop a new product with new characteristics, consisting of new optimised components, produced with a streamlined modern setup. An innovative and fresh analog material, sold under a new brand name that perfectly will match the global re-positioning of Integral Films."

Textile designer and photographer Paola De Giovanni aka MeanMagenta has some great photography on Flickr.

She has some beautiful colour images of flowers and some very striking, moody architectural compositions, but for me it's her balck and white portraiture and reportage style photographs of people going about their everyday lives that appeals. Especially this series of her mother making a dress with her 50's sewing machine, they have so much character and charm...

Avedon Fashion: 1944 - 2000

Who doesn't love Richard Avedon's work? His photography is amazing, it has character, energy and wit everything I love in a photograph. I can't believe this exhibition has past me by until now!

The International Centre of Photography in New York are exhibiting, 'Avedon Fashion: 1944 - 2000' until September 2009 - "the most comprehensive exploration to date of Avedon's fashion photography during his long career at Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, The New Yorker, and beyond".

"The exhibition will feature more than 200 works by Richard Avedon, spanning his entire career, and will include vintage prints, contact sheets, magazine layouts, and archival material."

I really want to see this, but if I can't get over to the big apple I'll have to make do with the gorgeous exhibition catalogue.

Vermont based photographer, Ash LaRose has a great portfolio of portrait and fashion photography. Her portrait work has great composition and is particularly striking to me - I love how they can look so feminine and delicate, but at the same time so strong and powerful.

Sarah Rose Smiley is an aspiring photographer from Madison, USA who confesses to having “a head that never leaves the clouds” and a “mind bursting at the seams with ideas”.

Her photos have a charming sense of innocence, they’re beautiful and dreamy, but have strong compositions – a powerful combination.

At only 15 years of age, Sarah is one of a new breed of young photographers using the internet to get their talent out there, even before they’ve left full-time education. “Seeing life through a lens”, she says, “seems the only possible path for me”.

I applaud Sarah for having so much passion and confidence at such a young age and for channeling that energy successfully into producing fantastic work.

Secret Blisters

Print Club are at it again and this time it's Secret Blisters! This annual screen printed poster bonanza still has 35 prints by 35 artists in editions of 35 all hand-pulled, signed and numbered, but this year the artists identities will be kept a secret.

They want people to buy the prints they love and not ones they know are by the big names. There should be a great selection though if it's anything like last year and artists, Miles Donovan, Anthony Burrill, Kate Moross, Jody Barton and Eine are already confirmed to have contributed.

The exhibition runs from 26 - 28 June 2009 at MC Motors, Dalston E8. Events over the weekend include printing your own Pure Evil Tee - Pull a 'Pure Evil' on Saturday and an auction selling framed 1st edition prints from the show on Sunday.

Derek Yaniger at Castor + Pollux

Derek Yaniger's Wildsville exhibition, is coming to our favourite local gallery, Castor + Pollux on the 26 June and running until 20 July. The exhibition will contain a selection of old and new prints and will have signed copies of his new book, 'Wildsville; the art of Derek Yaniger' available too!

Originally from Arkansas, Yaniger now lives in Georgia designing and printing his own work which is regularly published in Atomic, Barracuda and Car Kulture Deluxe. Over the years he's also created illustrations for companies like Marvel Comics and the Cartoon network.

His cool, retro illustrations are fantastic and totally appeal to the hot rodder in me - I love that whole 50's Tiki style and really can't wait for this exhibition.

As the man himself says, "Should be a jolly big hoot! Be there if ya’ can, man".

Newly Discovered Marilyn Monroe Photos

More newly discovered photos of an iconic figure, this time a 24 year old Marilyn Monroe.

Life magazine has just released 18 previously unpublished photographs on their website of the Hollywood starlet. The photos are from August 1950 when the then unknown Marilyn did a shoot with Life photographer Ed Clark in Griffith park, LA.

For some reason the shots were never printed in the magazine and the negatives have only just been discovered. "The only clue to why the photos were never published comes via an editor's note found with the negatives in the archives that read, "this take was over-developed and poorly printed."

I normally like very contrasty images, but I really like the washed out feel to these images, to me it adds to them making them more natural and less staged.

Barak Obama: The Freshman

Barak Obama: The Freshman is a collection of great of black and white images taken by Lisa Jack of the US President in his freshman year at Occidental College, LA in 1980.

At the time Lisa Jack was an aspiring photographer. She asked Obama if she could take some black and white portraits of him for her portfolio and he agreed. Over the years Lisa changed her career path and became a psychologist leaving the images untouched and forgotten, that is until Obama started his journey to the White House. Recognising their value, Lisa dug out the images but only revealed them after the election - not wishing to jeopardise his campaign. They were first published in Time magazine's 'Person of the Year' spread, December 2008.

The full set of images will be on display at LA's fabulous M+B gallery from today through to the 18 July. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the vacinity!

We Stride Worldwide

We Stride Worldwide is currently running at Concrete Hermit until 30th May as the UK leg of it's world tour.

The exhibition is a "collaboration between member galleries of the Rojo ®artspace global network and more than 150 artists". There are some really great UK artists in the show including some of our favourites, Jasper Goodall, Anthony Burrill and Jon Burgerman.

Brighton based Winsome & Saucy have just launched their new website to coincide with their open house as part of the Brighton Festival.

"W&S uses yarn produced on the UK, sterling silver, silk ribbon, and the occasional vintage find to make a collection of hand knitted accessories including scarves, necklaces, hair adornments and mittens".

They're sharing an open house with artist Rhys Trussler, 12 - 6pm, every Saturday and Sunday throughout May. Their venue is Kemp Town Trail #21 - Flat 4, 176 Freshfield Road, Brighton BN2 9YD and apparently there's delicious cake on offer for a small donation!

Legends: The Getty Images Gallery Collection

Marlon Brando by Murray Garrett, 1954

This great exhibition has a wonderful collection of images from the silver screen, of Hollywood movie stars, sporting heroes and music legends - think Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Muhammed Ali, The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and Sean Connery.

The images tell on and off screen stories giving a glimpse into the lives of these huge stars at the peak of their careers. The collection includes photos by Murray Garrett, Michael Ochs and Bert Hardy - it's "a celebration of the press photographer".

Legends: The Getty Image Gallery Collection is currently running at Crane Kalman until 3 May, so not long left to get down there and take a look!

Le Corbusier at the Barbican

I've posted about his over on our sister blog, but it's definitely worthy of a double post. Le Corbusier (1887-1965) is my favourite architect ever, his buildings are stunning and still look modern, even though the one above was completed in 1931.

"His architecture and radical ideas for reinventing modern living, from private villas to large scale social housing to utopian urban plans, still resonate today".

Le Corbusier: The Art of Architecture is running at the Barbican Art Gallery until 24 May 2009 - it's a must-see and I can't wait to get down there and see it!

Wren Photography sent us some of their work last week and I couldn't wait to share it. These dance, movement images are fantastic - I love the lighting and the contrast of the brick backdrop. In fact I think it's the lighting on all these images that really makes them stand out.

Wren wants to, “make pictures that intrigue and capture my viewer’s attention. I want them to make a connection. Second guess, think, and construct their own stories within the ingredients I give them. This is what sums up the aim and ideas behind the images I produce".

Rob Clarke's Dogs

These "pesky mutts" as Rob calls them are some of his latest works. I absolutely love this Italian Greyhound - it's facial expression and it's ears are wonderful. The collection includes coloured drawings and varnished acrylics, all original one-off pieces, signed and dated.

Robert Clarke

These gorgeous little fellows are the wonderful work of artist Robert Clarke.

Clarke studied at Central St Martins in the early 80's and throughout his varied career of being a lecturer, art director, curator and interior design consultant, he has always found pleasure painting birds.

These days he gets to paint and draw birds fulltime. The drawings (above) are A4 and the paintings (below) are 10 x 8" varnished acrylics with the bird sounds also incorporated into the layout. I love them all, but the Bullfinch is definitely my favourite!

Hopefully we'll be stocking some of these cheeky chappies when the online store opens (which won't be long now!), but in the meantime they can be bought from Elphicks and FRANK.

Edward Steichen: In High Fashion

Edward Steichen: In High Fashion, The Condé Nast Years (1923 - 1937) is an exhibition of 175 portraits created for Vogue and Vaity Fair, currently running at the International Center of Photography, NY until 3 May, 2009.

"Steichen's approach to fashion photography was formative and over the course of his career he changed public perceptions of the American woman. An architect of American Modernism and a Pictorialist, Steichen exhibited his fashion images alongside his art photographs. Steichen's crisp, detailed, high-key style revolutionized fashion photography, and his influence is felt in the field to this day—Richard Avedon, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Bruce Weber are among his stylistic successors."

This exhibition is the first to focus on Steichen's fashion photography. Many of the iconic images have been taken from the Steichen Archive at Condé Nast, which has an archive of over 2000 original prints, but very few have ever been displayed together.

For those (like me) who are unable to take a trip to NY and see it in person, there is a gorgeous book to accompany the exhibition which can be purchased here.

Rockarchive: The 10th Anniversary Collection

Crane Kalman, Brighton are currently showing the Rockarchive 10th Anniversary Collection until February 15th. It's a great opportunity to see some of the world's biggest rock 'n' rollers doing what they do best, captured by some of the worlds' leading music photographers.

"Having spent 30 years documenting decisive moments in rock music history, acclaimed photographer Jill Furmanovsky founded Rockarchive with the view to present the public with a true portrayal of life in the music business. Images document an intimate and unseen side to the public face of rock as the photographer and musicians became close friends. Jill’s ambition was to share her private collection of work with the people who would really appreciate it most; the fans.

In 1998 Rockarchive gained immediate success when Jill chose to produce 30 classic images from her 30 year career as a rock photographer in limited editions of 30 exclusive darkroom images. Edition 30/30/30 was founded and Rockarchive was born.

A decade later and Rockarchive has become a powerful collective with more than 50 music photographers and over 500 images of unseen and unpublished moments in rock and roll history. The exhibition will include work by some of the biggest names in music photography, including Mick Rock, Storm Thorgerson, Lex Van Rossen, Sheila Rock, Kevin Cummins and Jill Furmanovsky herself. Rockarchive produce hand signed limited edition fine art prints from a host of the best music photographers in the world".

All the images in the Rockarchive are fantastic and you can spend hours looking through all the artists, but the ones selected for the anniversary collection are a great mix of artists, genres and eras in rock 'n' roll history including world exclusive prints of David Bowie, Blondie and Adam Ant.

Tim Flach

I love this image! It's from Tim Flach's Equus Project - a gorgeous collection of horse images taken from his new photography book on the subject. Commissioned to produce the book by New Zealand's, PQ Publishing, Flach has explored these magnificant creatures around the world for 7 years; from Mustangs to Arabians, in the studio and in the wild.

His striking images are definitely worth a look and are on show at Crane Kalman until 31 December.

Eric Carle and The Very Hungry Caterpillar

One of the very first books I ever remember owning was The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a wonderful childrens book, written and illustrated by Eric Carle. Originally published in 1969 this Hungry Caterpillar has sold over 29 million copies in more than 47 different languages.

Carle was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1929 but at the age of 6 he and his family moved to Germany, where he lived and studied until 1952 when he realized his dream and returned to New York. His first job in NY was as a Graphic Designer for The New York Times promotional department, after which he went on to become an art director in an ad agency.

It wasn’t until author, Bill Martin Jr asked Carle to illustrate his latest story, ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?’ that his childrens book career began. His first solo book was ‘1, 2, 3 to the Zoo’ and his second was my childhood favourite, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.

His illustration style is distinctive and quite unusual. He collages hand-painted tissue papers - cut to shape, layered and finished off with hand drawn details, to create vibrant images with depth and bold colour. Throughout his career Eric Carle has illustrated more than 70 childrens books in this way, most of which he also wrote!

Dick Bruna

If you read our sister blog you will know how excited I was to find out that a couple of children’s squeeze ‘n’ squeak toys I bought years ago were illustrated by the great Dick Bruna in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

Hendrik Magdelanus Bruna, or Dick Bruna to you and me, was born in 1927 in Utrecht, Holland where he has lived and worked all his life as an author, artist, illustrator and graphic designer.

It had originally been intended for Bruna to take over the family business, A.W. Bruna & Zoon - the Netherland’s largest publishing house. He had no interest in running the business, a role that his brother took on, but over the years he has illustrated over 2,000 book covers and over 100 posters for the company including designs for Zwarte Beertjes, or Little Black Bear series, including The Saint, James Bond, Maigret (which he also translated into Dutch), Simenon, and Shakespeare.

Dick Bruna is most famous for his children's books. He has written and illustrated over 200, his more popular creation being ‘Nijntjie’ (pronounced nein-che) meaning little rabbit, better known outside Holland as Miffy.

Miffy was created in 1955, she is characterised by the thick black outline of her simplistic 2D shape and by the bright primary colours used for the clothing and the backgrounds in the Miffy books. She is female only because Bruna wanted to draw a dress rather than trousers on his new creation.

Miffy books are sold in more than 40 languages around the world and in 2005 she celebrated her 50th birthday, she is an international star! Limited edition prints are available from the Miffy shop.

Angie Lewin at Castor + Pollux

Alliums, Winter Spey, 5 trees

A selection of Angie Lewin's beautiful limited edition prints are currently showing at Castor + Pollux on Brighton Seafront until 17 November. We had a sneak preview yesterday and we love them.

Her work is inspired by contrasting landscapes, plants and seedheads seen on the North Norfolk coast and the Scottish Highlands. The exhibition includes linocuts, wood engravings and lithographs, all immensly detailed and intricate, with a bold use of colour giving them a lovely 1950's feel.

There's large and small prints, framed and unframed, so something for everyone, plus they still have a great selection of Jonny Hannah & Rob Ryan prints on display and some lovely work from Ruth Green (remember her from the Brighton Art Fair post).

FotoRAMBLAS

Crane Kalman are currently showing, ‘FotoRAMBLAS’ an amazing collection of photographs from the archives of a FotoRAMBLAS, a portrait studio situated on Las Ramblas in Barcelona from 1956 until 1998.

The studio created traditional portraits, captured families at special events and specialised in photographing celebrities of the time; actors, dancers, musicians, boxers and wrestlers. They give a wonderful insight into the fashions, trends and social culture of Barcelona at that time and have a beautifully nostalgic air about them. The dancers are my favourite - they look so glamorous in their full costume and there’s a great super-sized version of the top left image in the exhibition.

The exhibition is part of the Brighton Photo Fringe, which runs alongside the Brighton Photo Biennale (3 October - 9 November) so there’s still plenty of time to get down there. Can't make it - don't worry, more information about FotoRAMBLAS can be found here.

Chema Madoz

Yesterday I came across the work of Spanish photographer, Chema Madoz for the very first time and I have fallen in love with it. His images have everything I like to see in photography - humour, simplicity and strong lighting.

Madoz was introduced to photography and imaging in the early 80’s whilst studying art history at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and it seems it was his true calling, having had 2 decades of successful solo and collective exhibitions to date.

His photos are black & white, surrealist images created using everyday objects, shown in a new light, juxtaposed or with a witty twist. The lighting and contrast of the images enhances the intensity and creates an effortless beauty, even though you may be looking at a pair of scissors and a needle, or a burnt out matchstick!

I do hope he’s planning a UK exhibition sometime soon, it would be great to see these photos in the flesh.

Cut & Paste at The Estorick Collection

Cut & Paste: European Photomontage 1920 - 1945, curated by Lutz Becker is now showing at The Estorick Collection until 21 December.

Photomontage, the art of collaging together pieces of photographs with selected newsprint, emerged in the 1920's from Dadaists such as George Grosz and John Heartfield in Berlin and could also be seen in the work of Constructivist artists like El Lissitzky in Moscow. This new technique created illusions and manipulated the space on the page. It was dynamic and had a visual power that "spoke to the masses".

The exhibition is a homage to the manipulation of photographic imagery and modernist photomontage, "a rediscovery of the sources of modern image making, exploring the work of the great predecessors and innovators who created photomontages by physical means with scissors, scalpel and retouching brush".

The Estorick Collection is on Canonbury Square, London N1. It's open til 8pm on a Thursday, as is it's licensed Italian cafe, so there really is no excuse!

Mika Nash

Thanks to Mika Nash, a surface designer and illustrator based in London for contacting us about her new online shop and portfolio.

After graduating from Ravensbourne College with a degree in Fashion Textiles, Mika worked as a freelance screen-printer for Zandra Rhodes creating textiles for the ENO production of Aida and has exhibited at London Graduate Fashion Week twice; in collaboration with Ewa Dauter and printing for Gold award winner designer Jessica Au.

Mika's work is colourful, fun and bold, she has some great screen prints and t-shirts on her website, some of which are available to buy in her new shop.

Brighton Art Fair: The Lowdown

I finally sorted through all the postcards I collected last night at the Brighton Art fair preview, so here are my personal favourites and a taste of what's on offer:

Brighton Art Fair

Brighton Art Fair starts today. It's on until 7.30 today, 10-6 on Saturday and 10 - 5 on Sunday at the Corn Exchange, Church Street, Brighton.

I was lucky enough to have tickets to the preview last night so I can tell you there are some great pieces on display, although I was somewhat distracted by the free wine and cupcakes!

Design Cities at The Design Museum

Design Cities is a new exhibition on at the Design Museum and running until 4 January 2009. It features some classic pieces of design from some of the world's most iconic designers; Charles & Ray Eames, Le Corbusier and Issey Miyake to name but a few.

Flickr and Don't Panic are partnering the Design Museum throughout the exhibition to bring us, 'Your Design City', an opportunity to share your city-themed photography and the chance of having your work featured in a Design Museum exhibition and made into an 80,000 specially-commissioned, Don't Panic Poster.

Fish & Stitches at Castor & Pollux

Fish & Stitches is the new art collection by Brighton-based Cardigan, created exclusively for the Brighton Food & Drink Festival and based on everyone’s favourite seaside treat – fish & chips!

Cardigan Label is the brainchild of Kate Jenkins, set up in 2003 to, “fulfil her philosophy that anything can be created from yarn as long as it is made with love”. After making her name in the fashion industry designing for the likes of Donna Karan, Missoni and Marc Jacobs, Kate opened her shop, Cardigan, selling her unique, knitted creations - from keyrings to art.

The art collections are detailed, knitted versions of the nation’s best-loved foods, mounted in a box frame. They are colourful and wonderfully witty – a truly unique piece of art. To date there are 4 collections; Comfort Food, Soft Smokes, Cardigan in Bloom and the latest addition, Fish & Stitches.

Fish & Stitches is now running at Castor & Pollux, 164-66 King’s Road Arches on Brighton seafront until the 3 October.

Watch out for the Rob Ryan exhibition too, running at Castor & Pollux from 12 September to 20 October!

Can you believe that this great photography is the work of a 15 year old girl??

Well it is. Nirrimi Joy Hakanson is just 15 years old and lives in Townsville, Australia. She describes herself as, 'an amateur photographer', who one day, 'hopes to shoot for the likes of Vogue' and I for one, think she stands a very good chance.

It's so refreshing to see such talent and passion in someone so young. Goodluck Nirrimi, I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.

I came across Rick Bajornas photography work today an instantly loved it - I do have a liking for very contrasty images, maybe it's because they look more dramatic. These images are from his collection of New York Street photographs, 2001 -2007, so I thought it would be interesting to post them up alongside the black and white street photography of Helen Levitt, an American photographer born in NY in 1913 ...

Levitt devoted her long career, that started in the early 30's, to street photography in NY. She is said to be, 'the most celebrated and least known photographer of her time' even though her work spans almost 70 years. She photographed the people in her neighbourhood and the goings on of everyday life. The above photos are from the 1940's, so it's quite a contrast to look at them next to the Bajornas ones from 60 years earlier - life back then seems a lot less hectic and a lot more carefree than it does these days!

'Fashion in the Mirror: Self-reflection in Fashion Photography' is a great exhibition, on at the Photographers' Gallery until 14 September, that gives a unique insight behind-the-scenes of fashion photography.

The exhibition includes images from internationally renowned photographers, Tim Walker, Juergen Teller, Irving Penn and Mario Testino, as well as from the late Norman Parkinson and Richard Avedon.

The photographers', 'undress the theatre of fashion and question the creation of perfect beauty' by focusing on the 'processes and paraphernalia' involved in a fashion shoot; from trade secrets to studio sets, creating intriguing and witty images.
